ABOUT

BIO

Born in Malta, Marija Gauci is an art psychotherapist and a visual artist based in UK.

Much of her artwork is dedicated to capturing the possibilities of artistic expression. She aims to challenge the viewer to confront issues around contradictory experiences, mainly opposites such as comfort and discomfort, collapse and recovery and a struggle between connecting and disassociating. Exploring art making on a personal level is pivotal in Marija's profession. The main concern behind the works is to explore the fraught territories of memory and embodiment. May it also encourage viewers to wonder and use art as a tool to embrace transformation.

Marija is a BAAT and HCPC registered Art Psychotherapist currently working with children, young people and their families who experienced sexual abuse and/or domestic violence, trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). She has experience in education, NHS and community services providing individual and group art psychotherapy sessions. Marija takes on a psychodynamic approach and incorporates a range of art-based interventions depending on the individuals needs.

Marija's artwork is held in public and private collections in Malta, UK and Australia and is currently working on diverse projects including commissioned work.
